Aortic Valve Replacement. After the chest is opened and the heart exposed, you are put on the heart-lung bypass machine. Then the surgeon takes out you diseased valve, and is replaced with a prosthetic valve- either a mechanical valve, or a tissue valve-usually porcine. This is performed in patients with severe aortic stenosis, or narrowing of the aortic valve, or aortic regurgitation- leaking of the aortic valve. Video courtesy of eMedTV.com
