Low Back Pain causes $20 billion in healthcare expenditures a year. 60-90% of people will have an episode of back pain in their lifetime. It also causes significant disability. Most causes of back pain are benign, but it is important to look for red flags for more worrisome causes of back pain.

Back Pain is the most common cause of workdays lost in our society. Back pain can be from the muscles that support the spine, which is more common in younger people. Back pain can also be caused from the bone and cartiledge of the spine, or a herniated disc. Dr. Alexander Lee, from the Spine Center at Beth Israel Med. Ctr., discusses the different types of back pain.
New guidelines from the American College of Physicians recommends imaging studies for people with back pain only when there are significant neurologic symptoms or in people with other significant medical problems. It is important to determine if the back pain is muscles and musculoskelatal pain, or is there a more serious cause.

The prognosis of back pain varies based on the cause of the back pain, whether it is muscular back pain, or back pain from arthritits of the spine.
