The most common reason for liver transplant in children is biliary atresia. This presents very early in life. The child will have yellow skin, or jaundice. Some children have benign jaundice early in life, but being evaluated early is important if it persists. In this disease the biliary ducts do not form correctly, and occurs around the time of birth. There is a surgery that can relieve the blockage that helps in some children. Others will need to go on to liver transplant.
