Blocked coronary arteries. Fatty plaques build up on the inside of the heart vessel causing a narrowing. This decreases the amount of blood that can flow to your heart from the coronary arteries. This causes ischemia, or decreased blood flow and causes chest pain, called angina, shortness of breath and sometimes an irregular heart rhythm.
