Dr. Edward Eden, the Chief of Pulmonary/Critical Care at Roosevelt Hospital, discusses the prevention of COPD. Smoking is the most common contributing factor to COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. So not smoking is one of the keys to prevention of COPD.

Thank you for this information. I have been telling my father to stop smoking for years. He was diagnosed with COPD many years ago, and has been taking inhalers for years. Unfortunately, he continues to smoke, and his symptoms continue to worsen because of it. I don't think people realize how devasting COPD can be, my fathers lung doctor says he may need to be on oxygen all of the time if his COPD worsens.
