Celiac Disease is intolerance to wheat, gluten and rye. The mainstay of treatment is maintaining a gluten free diet. The diagnosis is made by a blood test and biopsy of the GI tract. If not well managed celiac disease can cause diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, malnutrition, irritability, osteoporosis, infertility, and colon cancer. Dr. Joseph Murray, a gastroenterologist from the Mayo Clinic discusses celiac disease.
