This animated video gives you an understanding of what cholesterol is, how LDL and HDL are different, and how cholesterol affects you. LDL is low density lipoprotein and is commonly referred to as the Bad cholesterol. The HDL or high density lipoprotein is commonly referred to as the good cholesterol.
Dietary intake can affect your cholesterol. The LDL, low density lipoprotein is the bad cholesterol. This can be lowered with a low fat, low cholesterol diet, avoiding saturated fat in your diet, and sometimes with medicines, such as the statins. THe ratio of good cholesterol to good cholesterol can be a good guide to your risk of developing atherosclerosis.
LDL, low density lipoprotein is the bad cholesterol, and you want to keep these levels low. The HDL, or high density lipoprotein is the good cholesterol that you want to keep higher. Treatment of high bad cholesterol includes a low fat low cholesterol diet, exercise, not smoking, and sometimes medications, such as the statins.
Cholesterol is broken down into a few different numbers when you see your blood test. The LDL is the bad cholesterol. The HDL is the good cholesterol, and the Triglycerides is the fat in the blood. This animated video reviews the goals for these types of cholesterol.
Cholesterol is a soft waxy substance that is an integral substance in your body. However, having high cholesterol has detrimental effects on the body. The bad cholesterol, the LDL, when it is too high makes your bodies blood vessels heal irregularly and puts you at risk for heart attack and stroke. The good cholesterol, the HDL, is actually protective for these diseases.
Problems that are associated with having high cholesterol include coronary artery disease, with heart attack and angina, peripheral vascular disease in the legs, and stroke. The good cholesterol, the HDL is protective for these diseases. Exercise is key to increasing HDL. THe bad cholesterol, LDL, when high is most important in causing coronary artery disease.
High HDL does not protect all from heart disease: Dr. Stanley Hazen, MD, PhD, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, discusses a new trial that showed that some people with a high HDL were not protected from developing coronary artery disease.
LDL, or low density lipoprotein, is commonly referred to as the "bad cholesterol" because if it is too high it causes heart disease. The goal level for LDL depends on your number of risk factors for heart disease, or if you alreay have coronary disease. Drs. Spencer King, and Nanette Wenger discuss the treatment of LDL.
Having high cholesterol, and more importantly having a high bad cholesterol or LDL puts you at increased risk of coronary artery disease and having a heart attack. The mainstay of medical therapy has been "statins" such as Lipitor, Crestor, and Zocor. Some people do not tolerate these medications due to side effects such as muscle ache. Dr. Stephen Kopecky, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic, discusses ways to lower cholesterol without a statin.
