This animated video gives you an understanding of what cholesterol is, how LDL and HDL are different, and how cholesterol affects you. LDL is low density lipoprotein and is commonly referred to as the Bad cholesterol. The HDL or high density lipoprotein is commonly referred to as the good cholesterol.
Cholesterol is broken down into a few different numbers when you see your blood test. The LDL is the bad cholesterol. The HDL is the good cholesterol, and the Triglycerides is the fat in the blood. This animated video reviews the goals for these types of cholesterol.
Cholesterol is a soft waxy substance that is an integral substance in your body. However, having high cholesterol has detrimental effects on the body. The bad cholesterol, the LDL, when it is too high makes your bodies blood vessels heal irregularly and puts you at risk for heart attack and stroke. The good cholesterol, the HDL, is actually protective for these diseases.
Having high cholesterol, and more importantly having a high bad cholesterol or LDL puts you at increased risk of coronary artery disease and having a heart attack. The mainstay of medical therapy has been "statins" such as Lipitor, Crestor, and Zocor. Some people do not tolerate these medications due to side effects such as muscle ache. Dr. Stephen Kopecky, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic, discusses ways to lower cholesterol without a statin.
LDL, or low density lipoprotein, is commonly referred to as the "bad cholesterol" because if it is too high it causes heart disease. The goal level for LDL depends on your number of risk factors for heart disease, or if you alreay have coronary disease. Drs. Spencer King, and Nanette Wenger discuss the treatment of LDL.
A new study, JUPITER, showed that people with normal cholesterol, and a high CRP level benefit from treatment with a statin. CRP is a measure of inflammation that has been linked to heart disease.
High Cholesterol is very common with an American diet, which is usually high in fat and cholesterol. It is important for people to understand what cholesterol is and what is does to understand why you need to improve the different types of cholesterol. HDL is the good cholesterol, and LDL the bad cholesterol. Video courtesy of eMedTV.com
High Cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for atherosclerosis, which is the cause of heart attack and stroke. With adequate treatment of high cholesterol, including a low fat, low cholesterol diet, exercise, and sometimes medications to help lower blood cholesterol, the prognosis is very good. Along with the treatment of the other risk factors for atherosclerosis, lowering blood cholesterol can lower your chance of having a heart attack or stroke.
High Cholesterol is asymptomatic, meaning it has NO symptoms. The only way to know that you have high cholesterol is by having a blood test with your physician. It is very important to know you cholesterol, especially if you have other risk factors for heart disease, such as family history, high blood pressure, diabetes, or smoking. Physicians look at different types of cholesterol in your blood, including the total cholesterol, the bad cholesterol-LDL, and the good cholesterol-HDL.
