Understanding Triglycerides: Dr. Elizabeth Klodas, a cardiologist, reviews what triglycerides are, how they contribute to heart disease, and how to best treat when they are elevated. Although triglycerides may not play as much of a role in developing atherosclerosis, they still should be treated if high. Exercise and diet can improve triglyceride levels. A low saturated fat diet can help with high triglycerides. Video courtesy of Cardiosmart.org.
LDL, low density lipoprotein is the bad cholesterol, and you want to keep these levels low. The HDL, or high density lipoprotein is the good cholesterol that you want to keep higher. Treatment of high bad cholesterol includes a low fat low cholesterol diet, exercise, not smoking, and sometimes medications, such as the statins.
Understanding cholesterol. Cholesterol is carried in the blood by lipoproteins, LDL and HDL. LDL has been referred to as the bad cholesterol, and if it is too high it can cause atherosclerosis. The HDL is commonly referred to as the good cholesterol. Video courtesty of healthguru.com
What is cholesterol and what are the types of cholesterol? Dr. Spencer King and other well known cardiologists discuss the different types of cholesterol that people should know. The "bad" cholesterol is called LDL or low density lipoprotein, and the "good" cholesterol is HDL or high density lipoprotein.
Problems that are associated with having high cholesterol include coronary artery disease, with heart attack and angina, peripheral vascular disease in the legs, and stroke. The good cholesterol, the HDL is protective for these diseases. Exercise is key to increasing HDL. THe bad cholesterol, LDL, when high is most important in causing coronary artery disease.
Having high cholesterol can affect many organs of the body. Atherosclerosis affects all of the blood vessels of the body. When the blood vessels are the arteries that supply the heart with blood, it can cause a heart attack. When is affects the arteries in the brain, it can cause a stroke.
Dietary intake can affect your cholesterol. The LDL, low density lipoprotein is the bad cholesterol. This can be lowered with a low fat, low cholesterol diet, avoiding saturated fat in your diet, and sometimes with medicines, such as the statins. THe ratio of good cholesterol to good cholesterol can be a good guide to your risk of developing atherosclerosis.
