Description:

Diabetics are at risk for wounds on the legs that don't heal. This occurs for a number of reasons, including the diabetes itself, and vascular disease, or blockage in the legs. Dr. Karen Andrews, a physician at the Mayo Clinic, discusses a new treatment being used at the Mayo Clinic called the Circulator Boot. This device appears to improve the blood flow to the legs and help with wound healing.

A similar therapy is called Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) Therapy that increases the blood flow throughout the body, not just the leg.

From the research studies I have looked at, EECP is very effective for angina, as it is designed to push blood back to the heart to increase blood flow is this area, not the extremities. In contrast, the Circulator is specifically designed to increase circulation in the lower legs and feet. My father has also had good results with the circulator boot for healing foot wounds.

Diabetes is such a serious disease. My mother in law has vascular disease and has just started to use the Circulator Boot. She is thrilled with the result and her wounds have really begun to heal. Thank goodness for the Mayo Clinic.
