CAD or coronary artery disease is plaque build up in the arteries that supply the heart with blood, the coronary arteries. This plaque is cholesterol rich. The narrowing of the arteries from this plaque can decrease the amount of blood supply to the heart, causing ischemia, which causes symptoms of chest pain, pressure, or tightness in the chest- angina, shortness of breath, and palpitations. There can be heart muscle damage, such as in a heart attack.
