Overview of cancer of the esophagus. Esophageal cancer is more common in older patients. There are 2 types: adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The common symptoms include difficulty swallowing- dysphagia, severe reflux. An EGD or upper endoscopy is the best test to look for esophageal cancer, and perform a biopsy if needed. Treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. An esophageal stent can help symptoms.
