Dr. John Geneczko, a gastroenterologist, discuss GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. The usual symptoms of GERD include heartburn, or even chest pain. Certain foods, alcohol, large meals, lying down soon after meals, cigarettes, and certain medications can worsen the symptoms. The constant backwash of acid through the lower esophageal sphincter can cause changes in the lining of the esophagus.
