Description:

Symptoms of GERD include heartburn, frequent use of antacids, sour taste in the mouth, frequent burping, and cough. Hiatal hernia is a risk factor. Complications of GERD include reflux esophagitis-inflammation of the esophagus, peptic strictures, and Barrett's esophagus- changes in the lining of the esophagus, which is a precancerous condition. Lifestyle modifications can help-weight loss, avoid alcohol and smoking. Medictions- antacids, and proton pump inhibitors treat the symptoms.

Is there a special test to find out if you have GERD? I get heartburn even when I eat pretzels. I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia about ten years ago.

I have been suffering from GERD nearly my whole life. In the past few years I have improved my diet, lost weight and exercise. THe GERD has definately gotten better. But still if I each just one potato chip, I will have reflux for a few hours.
