GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease, causes heartburn. The burning in the stomach is usually worse after eating certain meals, and while lying down. If you have heartburn more than 2 times a week, you may have GERD. It can also cause pain, difficulty swallowing , sore throat, hoarseness, breathing problems, and coughing.
