Deep venous thrombosis is a very common problem. The clots usually occur in the legs, although they can happen in other places. They cause pain and swelling. One complication of a DVT is when the clot travels through the heart to the lungs and causes a pulonary embolus, which can be fatal. The usually treatment is anticoagulation with a blood thinner called coumadin for around 6mo.

Risk factors for development of DVT include surgery, hospitalization, trauma, cancer, and neurologic disorders. Symptoms are commonly pain and swelling in one leg.
