Gingivitis. The gingiva or the gum. Bacteria that exists in the mouth can stick to the teeth and cause the sticky substance called plaque. This plaque can cause redness and irritation of the gums. This is called gingivitis. Risk factors include trauma, too vigorous brushing or flossing and certain medical conditions. Gingivitis is the first sign of periodontal disease.
