In the past few years, Drug Coated Stents have been the gold standard of treatment because of the lower risk of re-narrowing called re-stenosis. However, because of the drug coating on the stent, there appears to be a slightly higher risk of clotting of the stent, mostly in patients who cannot take dual anti-platelet treatment with aspirin and plavix. In patients who need some elective surgery it is recommended to wait 1 year after a drug coated stent.
