Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. ALL is a cancer of the bone marrow stem cell that produce lymphocytes. Because there aren't enough white blood cells, patients are unable to fight infection. Symptoms of ALL include persistent fever, fatigue, bleeding, easy bruising and swollen lymph nodes. ALL is common in children, but is curable. Video courtesy of Blausen Medical.
AML, acute myelogenous leukemia is the most common blood cancer in adults. This animated video reviews AML. Patients with AML are unable to fight infection since they do not have enough functioning white cells. Common symptoms include fatigue, fever, bleeding and bruising. Liver Disease causes dysfunction of the liver which produces some of the factors which help your blood clot. For this reason there can be bleeding associated with liver disease. People with liver failure or cirrhosis will commonly bleed after surgery or into the GI tract. Unexplained bruising or easy bruising is a common finding. A blood test, the PT/INR, is used to measure the risk of bleeding. Plasma transfusions are commonly used, and a few will need liver transplantation.
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia: Dr. Tim Call, a hematologist/oncologist at the Mayo Clinic, discuss CLL- Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. The average age of diagnsosis is in the 60's. It is frequently found on blood test , with a high white blood count. A confirmatory test using flow cytometry is usually performed. Staging includes physical exam, blood tests- LDH and beta 2 microglobulin.
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia-CLL. The bone marrow produces stem cells that go on to form all of the cells in the blood. White blood Cells or lymphocytes are the cells that fight infection. In CLL, the bone marrow produces too many lymphocytes, which are abnormal and can not fight infection, so people are prone to infection. Other symptoms include fatigue, anemia, and easy bruising. Video courtesy of Blausen Medical.
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia -CML. Stem cells are produced in the bone marrow that become the cells that compose the blood. CML is a cancer of the white blood cells in the blood and bone marrow. CML is an inherited defect where some of the DNA on chromosome 9 transfers to #22, now called "the philadelphia chromosome". This makes too many granulocytes form. Common symptoms are anemia, weight loss, fever and an enlarged spleen. Video courtesy of BLausen Medical.
Coumadin (warfarin) is a potent blood thinner that is used to treat different conditions that require blood thinning, such as DVT(blood clot in the leg), pulmonary embolus, atrial fibrillation, and mechanical heart valves. The major complication of coumadin is bleeding. When you are on coumadin, you will need to check a blood test- the PT/INR. Sandra Takami, PharmD, a doctor of pharmacology.
Essential Thrombocythemia- ET, means too many platelets in your blood. Platelets are the type of cell involved in clotting. ET is a myeloproliferative disease, which is a group of diseases when the bone marrow make too many cells. Symptoms can be clotting, bleeding, nose bleeds, easy bruising, fatigue, bone pain, or a rash. It is diagnosed from a blood test. A bone marrow biopsy may be needed. Treatment includes aspirin, hydroxyurea, and interferon.
Hereditary Spherocytosis is a cause on anemia, this animated video shows you why. In this disease, because of a genetic defect, the red blood cells become abnormal in shape-like a sphere. This causes them to be destroyed in the spleen, causing anemia and an enlarged spleen.
