HHS’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality released “Staying Active and Healthy with Blood Thinners,” a free bilingual 10-minute video in English and Spanish. This video helps educate patients about how to use anticoagulant drugs, commonly called “blood thinners,” safely. Coumadin (generic- warfarin) is the most widely prescribed blood thinner.
What is Myeloma? Dr. Morie Gertz, from the Mayo Clinic reviews multiple myeloma. Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells of the bone marrow. The first test that reveals myeloma is usually a blood test that finds an increased number of plasma cells of the blood, anemia, elevated calcium, elevated uric acid, and abnormal urine function. The bone marrow will also be examined. Symptoms can include fatigue, shortness of breath, tiredness and bone pain..
What is multiple myeloma? Dr. Morie Gertz from the Mayo Clinic discusses Multiple Myeloma at the IMF. Mutiple Myeloma is a malignancy of the bone marrow, when cells in the marrow grow without restraint and replace the normal bone marrow. It causes anemia, which causes symtpoms of fatigue, and loss of energy. Another symptom can be bone pain. Some patients will need stem cell transplantation for treatment.
Patients with sickle cell disease can be very severe and leads to early death and morbidities including stroke, seizures, and lung disorders that can be crippling. There are also the periods of crisis, whcih can be very painful, with bone pain, abdominal pain. Bone marrow transplant can be very effective, but very few patients have this treatment.
Essential Thrombocythemia- ET, means too many platelets in your blood. Platelets are the type of cell involved in clotting. ET is a myeloproliferative disease, which is a group of diseases when the bone marrow make too many cells. Symptoms can be clotting, bleeding, nose bleeds, easy bruising, fatigue, bone pain, or a rash. It is diagnosed from a blood test. A bone marrow biopsy may be needed. Treatment includes aspirin, hydroxyurea, and interferon.
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia-CLL. The bone marrow produces stem cells that go on to form all of the cells in the blood. White blood Cells or lymphocytes are the cells that fight infection. In CLL, the bone marrow produces too many lymphocytes, which are abnormal and can not fight infection, so people are prone to infection. Other symptoms include fatigue, anemia, and easy bruising. Thrombocytopenia is a condition that means low platelet count. Platelets are the cells in the blood that help you to form clots when they are needed. If there are not enough platelets, the major problem is bleeding and bruising. The normal platelet count is 150,000 to 350,000. When the platelet count is below 10,000, spontaneous bleeding can occur. THere are many causes of thrombocytopenia including chemotherapy, heparin induced, and ITP. Video courtesy of BLausen Medical.
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia -CML. Stem cells are produced in the bone marrow that become the cells that compose the blood. CML is a cancer of the white blood cells in the blood and bone marrow. CML is an inherited defect where some of the DNA on chromosome 9 transfers to #22, now called "the philadelphia chromosome". This makes too many granulocytes form. Common symptoms are anemia, weight loss, fever and an enlarged spleen. Video courtesy of BLausen Medical.
AML, acute myelogenous leukemia is the most common blood cancer in adults. This animated video reviews AML. Patients with AML are unable to fight infection since they do not have enough functioning white cells. Common symptoms include fatigue, fever, bleeding and bruising. Video courtesy of Blausen Medical.
