Overview of HIV: HIV over time supresses your immmune system. People at risk for HIV include homosexuals, immigrants from countries with high prevalence, and IV drug abusers. A blood test confirms the diagnosis. Treatment with antiretrovirals can prolong life significantly. The treatment is not curative, but it can supress the viral load so that it is basically undetectable.
