Stress testing helps doctors look for evidence of coronary artery disease, or blockages in the arteries that supply the heart with blood. This blockage can impinge on the lumen of the vessel and decrease the amount of blood supply to the heart muscle during exercise. It is useful in patients with chest pain, shortness of breath, those with risk factors for heart disease, and preoperatively for non cardiac surgery. Nuclear imaging can increase the sensitivity of the test.
