Some patients are treated by placing small catheters in the brain and treating the blood clot in the brain locally through the catheter. One treatment is with the "clot busting" medication TPA. If given within 3 hours of the onset of stroke symptoms, it can limit the neurologic deficit from a stroke. Catheters can also be used to go into the artery in the brain restore blood supply to the brain. This is only used in some strokes and must also be used early in the stroke.
