Peripheral artery disease is atherosclerosis of the vascular system outside of the heart. This disease process causes plaque build up, just as it occurs in the heart to cause coronary artery disease. In the legs, this can cause symptoms such as pain in the calfs, known as claudication. The risk factors for PAD- peripheral artery disease are similar to coronary disease, including smoking.
Dr. Skop discusses PAD.
Dr. Guy S. Mayeda, and interventional cardiologist, discusses the treatment of PAD, peripheral arterial disease, including the use of the Silverhawk catheter. Visit www.lacard.com for more information.
Peripheral Artery Disease is atherosclerosis of the vessels outside of the heart. Commonly people will develop plaque in the arteries in the legs. This plague is similar to the blockages in the heart arteries that cause heart attack. The risk factors are similar: smoking, diabetes, hypertension, and having high cholesterol are the main risk factors that are treatable. In addition to medications, some patients will require opening the blockages in the legs with angioplasty or sugery or both.
Dr. Gerald Zelenock, the Chairman of Surgery at the Univ. of Toledo, discusses the prevention of vascular disease.
Diabetics are at risk for wounds on the legs that don't heal. This occurs for a number of reasons, including the diabetes itself, and vascular disease, or blockage in the legs. Dr. Karen Andrews, a physician at the Mayo Clinic, discusses a new treatment being used at the Mayo Clinic called the Circulator Boot. This device appears to improve the blood flow to the legs and help with wound healing.
Dr. Jean Starr, a vascularsurgeon at the Ohio State University, discusses the benefit of using an endograft to repair the aorta.
Clogged leg arteries can be opened through a minimally invasive procedure with the SILVERHAWK, a mini drill with a tiny rotating blade for cutting away plaque. The procedure only involves a tiny puncture in the patient's groin. ~ Detroit Medical Center
Dr. Mayeda, an Interventional Cardiologist, discusses peripheral vascualar disease including treatment using a new device called the Diamondback 360. This device is used in difficult to treat areas of the leg including small vessels below the knee and arteries with significant amounts of calcium.
