Peripheral artery disease is atherosclerosis of the vascular system outside of the heart. This disease process causes plaque build up, just as it occurs in the heart to cause coronary artery disease. In the legs, this can cause symptoms such as pain in the calfs, known as claudication. The risk factors for PAD- peripheral artery disease are similar to coronary disease, including smoking.

Peripheral Artery Disease is atherosclerosis of the vessels outside of the heart. Commonly people will develop plaque in the arteries in the legs. This plague is similar to the blockages in the heart arteries that cause heart attack. The risk factors are similar: smoking, diabetes, hypertension, and having high cholesterol are the main risk factors that are treatable. In addition to medications, some patients will require opening the blockages in the legs with angioplasty or sugery or both.

What is Peripheral Artery Disease or PAD. It is the formation of cholesterol rich plaque in the walls of the blood vessels outside of the heart. In the legs it can cause pain called claudication. The screening test for PAD in the legs is called the ABI or anke brachial index. If the ABI is abnormal, you may need an angiogram. The treatment of PAD is with exercise, medications, angioplasty and surgery, depending of the extent of the disease.
