Watch and learn from one of Boston's top cardiovascular specialists about venous disease- better understand varicose veins and potential dangers if the disease progresses.
Peripheral Artery Disease is important because it affects the circulation to the leg, causing individuals to have leg pain when they walk.
Deep Vein Thrombosi, or DVT is a blood clot in a vein, most commonly occuring in the legs. The risk of DVT is that the clot can break off and travel to the lungs. Symptoms include leg pain, redness and swelling.
There are many different causes of leg pain. Sometimes after surgery or a long plane flight, people can develop a blood clot or DVT, which can cause pain and swelling. Varicose veins can cause pain, which is easily treatable with lasers, but is not life threatening like a DVT. Some people develop blockage in the legs arteries, called PAD.
What is Peripheral Artery Disease or PAD. It is the formation of cholesterol rich plaque in the walls of the blood vessels outside of the heart. In the legs it can cause pain called claudication. The screening test for PAD in the legs is called the ABI or anke brachial index. If the ABI is abnormal, you may need an angiogram. The treatment of PAD is with exercise, medications, angioplasty and surgery, depending of the extent of the disease.
