This animated video shows you what casues a herniated disc. The nucleus pulposus is the soft spongy tissue inside the disc and the annulus fibrosis is the outer coating which maintains the shape of the disc. Age and pressure, or injury can cause damage to the disc which then can cause impingment on the adjacent nerves casing pain and parathesias or tingling. Video courtesy of Blausen Medical.
