Bipolar disorder is an inheritied disease. However, it is inherited as a predisposition to the disease. If certain stressful situations are avoided the disease can be prevented or atleast delay the onset of disease.
There are two sets of symptoms in bipolar disorder. One is the Manic state when people feel invincible, increased energy, euphoria, lack of sleep, irritability, and sometimes hypersexual. There other is depression when people are hopeless, and life feels bad, and they can be suicidal.
Bipolar disorder is a lifelong disease, but there is good medical therapy for bipolar disorder. It is important to prevent as many depressive or manic episodes as subsequent episodes usually become more severe.
