DVT is deep venous thrombosis, which simply stated is a blood clot in the vein. DVT occurs most commonly in the legs and presents with a painful, swollen leg. The clot from the legs can on occasion move through the heart to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolus. Surgery, pregnancy, injury and birth control pills are a risk factor. Treatment is the blood thinner coumadin for 3-6 mo. Dr. Steve Fein, a hematologist, discusses DVT.
