Hip pain and replacement: Dr Daniel Berry, an orthopedic surgeon at the Mayo Clinic, discusses older types of hip replacements that used bone cement which can gradually loosen from the bone. The older ball of the replacement can also breakdown. Newer hip replacements use a coating so that bone grows to the prosthesis, and a ceramic ball that does not breakdown.
